"I think that above everything else a painting should be an ornament", Maurice Denis.

 "We are pattern seekers", Kepler.

My work relates to the landscape and to pattern. In my paintings I think of two systems being at play together: the form, colour, and texture of my surroundings; with geometrical pattern and space. They would appear to be quite opposed, but mathematical order permeates everything. Galileo said, 'The book (of nature) is written in mathematical language....' This mathematical language seems to reflect the rhythms of the organic world as well as behaving as an intermediary to contemplation of it. I experiment with this interplay of colour, landscape and geometric pattern, often Islamic pattern, using it to underpin the formal issues of painting and also to explore it as a metaphor for my experience of the world.
